Brazilian Rainforest Communities Stand Up to Illegal Loggers

Date : 25th September 2002, Source : Greenpeace

Locals representing almost 600 Amazon forest dwellers were joined by Greenpeace and others for a blockade of the bright green waters of Brazil's Jaraucu river. It was the first such community protest in nearly 20 years. Over 40 small riverboats anchored across the 100-meter river.

The three day blockade ended September 22nd, with the seizure of two illegal logging barges. The barges were impounded by IBAMA (the Brazilian Environmental Agency) and their owner was fined nearly $60,000.
